While visiting friends in Hanover ON I went out one morning and discovered this beetle on the tire. It couldn't have been more perfectly lined up if I had placed it there myself. A visitor to one of my exhibitions, an entomologist, told me this is an "Eyed Click Beetle" so named because the markings look like giant eyes that scare away predators. The click refers to the fact that when the beetle is turned over, it makes a clicking sound as it attempts to right itsef. There is even a children's book in the library about this beetle.
